Hello!

So, one thing I've always been proud of with the XWF is the quality of our results. We tend to do full match write-ups, all the way from the opening bell to the final pinfall, with all the twists and turns, momentum shifts and false finishes of watching wrestling live.

It's the most work, but it makes me the most proud of our final product.

...That being said, haha...

In order to maintain this level of quality in our results, given our dearth in match writers, I've occasionally had to write anywhere between three to five matches a show. Given how much research and time I put into trying to use y'all's RPs to inform the characters and their actions and strategies in the ring, just one match is already a time-consuming affair... any more than two, and we're talking about a full day of work. On the most recent Warfare, I ended up writing five matches, and was essentially writing on-and-off all-Sunday-and-Monday to get results out on time.

So! We're already experimenting a little bit with Anarchy, to try and make the workload more manageable, because we've *always* had less Anarchy match writers than Warfare match writers. In that spirit, we're switching to a Highlight Reel match format, which will include the coolest spot ideas, then straight on to the finish, with all the last second reversals and exciting conclusion.

I've fought against this proposal of, in any way, cutting down our results for a while... but, at this point, I can't maintain my current match writing workload.

How does this make you feel? Do you feel strongly about the experience of a full match write-up or do you just skip mostly to the end of a match? Would you find highlight reel style matches acceptable?

Thanks y'all!

I kind of figured this was coming. I honestly don't feel super strongly about it, and I think if anyone feels the need to demand full match results they should probably step up and be match writers.

Full disclosure, match writing is my least favorite efed actvivity. I just never caught the bug. If I didn't hate it so much I'd probably do it more often. So I appreciate you guys who write matches and especially you Flynn, as I've always noticed the extra ounce you put in match results by drawing on people's characters and RP's.

But as nice as that is, nobody should have to spent huge blocks of their personal lives writing fake wrestling matches so I say do whatever you need to do to make it manageable.

Yes, there are so many other aspects to match writing to as an active RPer. I could get someone annoyed they didn't like how I portrayed the character in the match for example. Personally, unless I'm really invested in the story, I typically only read full matches I'm involved in and just read the lead up/finish to others. Just my opinion. In the past as a match writer, I enjoyed getting to write separate finishes for each outcome and then they just insert the winning finish, but I realize that's more work as well. I personally don't know what the condensed highlight version looks like, so perhaps other people have the same questions? I agree with Kristoffer though. I don't love writing the matches and whatever works best. I prefer on time shows over late ones.

Let me just say, after peeping the Anarchy writers room, i think highlight reels can be implemented to save time. Because, although full matches are great/be main point on warfare (per say), i think if we aim to have at least quick 1,000 (or so) reel of the match itself to save time for others who can help within the process. I think if we go for that, it may help the off load on those who want to write for the shows without all the Puro/Pure style matches.

So in short, lets aim for highlight reels moving forward, but one question how should the commentators be if we go straight for the highlight reel? (thats my question, since i want to help to write some matches this week.)

Great question! I think to an extent the commentators can largely be implemented up to how the person is writing the match (even if that can cause some various inconsistencies in their characters between matches, but I think that's a discussion for another time). I think though even with a highlight reel approach it's still worth it to have them present and reacting to the action as it's unfolding. Some people might just see them as flavor text and cut down on them, but I like being able to have them fill on certain details of moves or various stories going on to help enhance a match if I'm able to keep up on said story myself.

I think at the end of the day, it's just a matter of doing what you feel comfortable with and trying to do the best you can with it.

I think since Anarchy falls under the umbrella of "micro" then the match writing should reflect that. Shorter, highlight, hot reels, cool spots, finish. Most feds already do the "summary" style for their micro-branded shows, so people are used to it and don't really complain much about it. Although I will say, I love the way y'all write matches here, so I'll miss the depth in some of it.

As a sidenote, I personally don't think there is anything wrong with a fedhead and/or admins using A.I. to write the matches for them. Feds are starting to do this for their match writing aspects because it's hard to find help with match writing from their fed members.

I despise writing matches, which is ironic because I spent the first 5 years of my efedding journey in competitive match writing feds, lol. Yes, everyone, I'm that old. Match writing feds were the rage before promo based fedding came along. By the end of it, I was burnt out and have never recovered.

As you know I have always been like one of the only voices saying "we don't need these full ass matches." Yes, they're better 100%. But it's really important to remember just how much work goes into getting results out for a show. Aside form a half dozen or so matches there's also coordination between segs, there's judgments, and all of it is very time consuming and at the end of the day, this is a hobby not a job.

I had experimented way back in the day with RP Madness results as a GM. The matches would be largely summarized then have 'the big finish' which is where all the drama unfolded. I did it again with the short lived developmental RTX brand and did it a third time with angled Madness. The headlocks and suplexes just aren't important.

Ultimately, what I would propose is the same thing I tried to push as fedhead: summarized (or in your terminology highlight reel) undercard with a full write up for the main event.
