A camera opens on a lovely view of the San Antonio River Walk. The well-kept walkways and stairs snake their way through the city and along the water. Just up ahead in the background is the famous Selena Bridge.
"This is so beautiful... I can't believe I haven't made this trip before!" A female voice behind the camera says breathlessly.
The camera lingers on the bridge a bit longer. A street band begins to set up on the opposite side of the camera.
“And that’s just the start," A familiar voice replies. The camera pulls back to reveal Betsy Granger walking towards the bridge. Her red dress floats around her becomingly as she twirls around to face her sister.
"Speaking of," Adelaide says, her voice brimming with good humor. "Were you planning to get to the word vomit any time soon?"
Betsy grins cheekily. "Soon. I went from being ambushed by my opponent in my not-so-grand return to facing the newly crowned Universal Champion."
Addy nods sympathetically, but her foot begins to tap, marking her impatience with her younger sister. Betsy starts to walk again, leading across the Selena Bridge and towards the musicians, who were now warming up.
"I wasn't sure how I wanted to approach this match with Kieran. But I think I just got an idea."
The musicians are now ready to begin performing. Betsy walks up to them and smiles disarmingly. "Would it be quite all right with you fine folks if I made up some lyrics to your music?" She asks the surprised musicians.
The guitarist is the first to react. "Of course, Chica Blanca, if you think you can keep up." He says warmly as he plucks the strings of his guitar. Her smile is all the response he needs. "You heard Chica Blanca, let's do the damn thing." Nodding to the other four, they begin to play at an upbeat tempo.
Betsy closes her eyes and focuses on the music, allowing the rhythm to flow through her.
She opens her mouth as her body catches the beat. "Come gather round, now, and lend me your ears." Her body begins to sway as the words begin to flow from her lips.
“For tales of a universe that is more than it appears
For I bear rousing tidings for all to hear,
Come now, never fear, grab your friends and draw near."
At this point, a small crowd began to gather around them. Addy flashes Betsy a thumb-up. Betsy starts to dance in earnest as she continues to sing.
Tourists and locals all stop to watch as the street musicians and Betsy put on a show. Many go with the flow, while others seem perplexed by Betsy herself.
"Much have I seen, and so much more left to explore,
Far beyond where no man has gone before,
To experience new species, terrain, lore,
For as far as I’ve gone, I still crave more!"
The passion in her voice is catching as the musicians continue to play effortlessly. Betsy dances around with abandon as she continues.
“Despite my desires, fate has decreed that here I stay,”
At this, Betsy throws her arms out and spins dramatically.
“To remain in one place, to live day to day,”
Betsy’s tone becomes more intense, her wild dancing becoming much tighter and more interactive with the crowd. The musicians match this change in beat, as if they’d been performing with her their entire lives.
“But all is not lost, the world need not be gray,
For there is still a place in which I can play.”
Even as she sings, her tone becomes mocking.
“True, my return to the ring wasn’t so grand,
All because Stormy Hixx wanted to act on brand,”
Betsy makes a face as the crowd boos, most of them not knowing why but joining along anyway.
“She’ll learn firsthand the fire she’s fanned,
If she doesn’t learn first from catching these hands.”
A few folks in the crowd respond with an “OOOOHHHHH” at this last bit. It’s obvious now that several of the tourists who have approached are XWF loyal fans and very excited to see Betsy Granger hanging out in the streets.
“Stormy knew she couldn’t defeat me in the ring,
But the same can’t be said of The King,”
Despite her focus and determination, a soft look glazes over her green eyes. A warm smile lights up her face as her cheeks flush slightly.
“My next opponent is decked out in bling,
And it is of him of whom I truly wish to sing.”
The musicians catch something in her tone that Betsy herself doesn’t even notice.
“Kieran, Kieran, where should I begin?
Perhaps I should start with your Universal Title Win,
Or perhaps I should admit that underneath this grin,
There is a woman who longs to sin.”
The XWF fans now look at each other, confused.
“Yours was the first face I noticed when I resurfaced,
When you won that title off Dolly in that four-way circus,
And while I walk into our match with a purpose,
That pretty face of yours is making me nervous.
I’ll admit here and now, you give me a rush,
Whenever I look at you, I feel my cheeks start to blush,
Can’t tell if it’s disgust or the start of a crush,
But it’s a crush I must hush before our upcoming brush.”
Her eyes stay limpid pools of green, her cheeks still red as she pictures Kieran in her mind.
“I’m the King of the Universe, you loudly proclaim,
Just because the whole of the XWF now knows your name,
But you and I, honey, we’re far from the same.
You might be King of the Ring, but the Universe, baby, that’s my big game,
You might be the champ, but come Thursday, I’ll put you to shame.”
The musicians fade out along with Betsy’s words. The crowd applauds, confused, as the camera shuts off.
