"Forgive me father, for I have sinned."
In all of his sixty three years, Father James O'Malley had never felt such a feeling of dread wash over him. It felt like the shadows themselves had taken physical form and they had engulfed him when he heard that deep, forboding voice. His hands began to shake worse, even moreso than the synptoms of his disease had caused him. He knew the man on the other side of that screen was different. The saints whispered to him that this may not be a good idea. But O'Malley always was the type to welcome all those seeking salvation. And it's said that GOD will hear a sinner's prayers before he will a Saint. Because sinners need him even more.
Cain couldn't believe that he was doing this. Two millenia on this Earth and had he ever prayed? No. Not once. But since joining The Brotherhood...since feeling that bond...he had felt something inside of him. Something clawing to get out. He awaited O'Malley's response, fighting his killswitch with everything that he had.
"G-go ahead m-m-my child."
"Do you have a while, Father?"
"For a child of God, I've all the time in the world."
Father O'Malley chuckled a bit. He was certain that this would not take long. How much could one man have possibly done?
"I never considered myself a child of God, father. If I was, it is a certainty that he has disowned me by now. I have done so much.....so much..." Very uncharacteristically, Cain swallowed a lump in his throat. The revelation had hit him as he'd seen how good the Brotherhood were to him. Evil they may be, they were supportive. "...wrong."
"My son, God never disowns his children. He always forgives, and he loves all of us. I am sure that you couldn't have done something so terrible that he would never forgive you."
O'Malley frowned as he heard a sigh from behind the screen.
"When I was a young man, I tended the fields of my father while my brother tended Sheep. We both put our hearts and souls into our work. My crops and his herd flourished, but then the father demanded a sacrifice. I offered up my best harvest, and my brother his prized sheep. The father shown his favor upon my brother. I was so angry that I killed my brother. I bashed his head in with the biggest rock I could find..." For the first time in two thousand years, a tear slid down Cain's cheek. A tear of remorse. "...and when my...when my father asked of me, I...told him I am not my brother's keeper..."
The strangest calm remained on Father O'Malley's demeanor. He narrowed his eyes, and shook his head. This couldn't be who he assumed it was.
"Even so, young man, your sins can be forgiven and do not worry. I will not tell the authorities."
"It wouldn't matter if you did, Father. Even a life's sentence is of no consequence to me."
"Oh? How so?"
"Following my murder of my brother, I was marked. It was my punishment from GOD that I never realize the sweet release of death. He cast me away from him...away from my family. I've been thinking alot father...and I have decided that this is my punishment. To forever roam this planet, killing without end. Over and over I kill, my rage toward the past fueling my bloodlust. But....with these thoughts...comes a desire to live normally."
"That's interesting. I have a feeling that I know who you are, but my sanity wants to say "no". If you are who I think you are, I am sorry for your pain over all the-"
"At least someone believes me. It makes me so angry when people say I'm a fraud."
One thing about people of the faith is that they are open to the Supernatural. They know that there is more to our world than meets the eye. O'Malley felt a sense of honor to actually meet a real life denizen of the Garden of Eden. Cain felt a sense of relief as the father took his words to heart. There was an awkward silence for the longest time, but Father O'Malley broke that silence.
"I believe in the Lord's word, my son. I also believe that our interpretation of his word is not always the right interpretation. Who's to say you aren't who you say you are? Who's to say that your intentions aren't purified by the guilt of your actions? Besides, HE told me that you would come."
"GOD?"
"No, my chil-"
"Duke?"
"Try your instructor, my son. He informed me that you wanted to change your ways. But he alsosaid not to discourage you from being what you are, Cain. Your nature is unshakable.."
"I don't want to murder innocent people anymore..."
"Then be a warrior. Be a dark angel, the dark angel of The Brotherhood. You've been senselessly murdering people for years, my child. That's bad for The Brotherhood. Instead of killing the innocent, punish those who deserve it. Become their..."
In all honesty, Cain could not believe what he was hearing. The father was in league with The Brotherhood all along, and everything he had said, made sense. Cain finished the sentence of O'Malley.
"...Enforcer."
The old man smiled warmly.
"That is what you are destined to be. The Enforcer, the one who enforces the will of The Brotherhood. Remember my child, Darkness is not always evil. Darkness is the unknown, and you never know what you can accomplish unless you take a new path. You never know where you will end up, my child."
"Well....since you put it that way...where I do I begin?"
"You have already taken the first step. You've forgiven yourself...I can hear it in your voice. I have set you upon the path, but it is your job to walk it. Understand?"
Cain just nodded, ready to ask another question as he dried his tears. "Father?"
Silence.
"Father? Are you still there?"
With another round of silence, Cain became curious. He'd thought he'd heard the priest sigh, but he wasn't sure. He opened the door of the booth, stepping out, then opened O'Malley's section. He felt a great bit of empathy as he noticed the Priest sitting there, eyes wide open, hand clutching his chest. His eyes burned slightly as he gently brushed the older man's eyes shut, and actually made the holy trinity on his torso. He said one last thing, smiling gently.
"Thanks old man. Rest now..."
But he knew his rest would never come. Might as well make the best of it.
